It's cooled down here in the Pyrénées, the last few weeks were very hot as you would expect in summer. July had the highest average temperature on record, 28c, with a max of 36c. The first signs of autumn have started to appear, the valley is taking on more brown colours as the bright greens fade. Nighttime temps on Col du Tourmalet have already been below 0c. Best of all, today the flies are gone.
I took this photo yesterday evening from one of the upstairs bedrooms in La Lanterne Rouge Pyrénées Cycling Lodge.

Critérium de Lacq-Audéjos had it's 6th edition last night. Lacq-Audéjos is a town of 700 people just west of Pau. It sits on top of a large gas field, which produces five billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. It's been pumping gas throughout France for the past 50 years. The gas field is operated by Total who are the main sponsor of the critérium.
42 riders took part, 27 professional and 15 amateurs from local clubs. The course was 1.6km long and was ridden 50 times. Entry for spectators was free, there was in excess of 9,000 present.

Col de Sencours

I rode up to Col de Sencours (2378m) on Sunday. Epic road. Epic ride. Climb to Col du Tourmalet and then continue on the dirt road heading for Pic du Midi. Col de Sencours is 4km up the road. The road and the scenery are spectacular, it's a taste of what Col du Tourmalet was like before it was sealed. From Col de Sencours the road continues on for 1.5km to Col de Laquets (2637m), just below Pic du Midi.

Three people correctly picked Dan Martin for the win in Bagnéres yesterday.
As I'm feeling very happy this morning, I'll be sending a jersey to each.
Chris Merrell in England.
Colm Bloomer in Jersey, Channel Islands.
Brendan Sweeney in Ireland.
Thanks to all who entered and well done Dan Martin.
I'll be running another for the Vuelta in September.

Cirque de Troumouse - After the Flood
Jul 05 2013 07:56 AM |
Velo Peloton
in cols
As there is no Tourmalet, cyclists are seeking out other roads to ride instead. Port due Boucharo and Cirque de Troumouse fit the bill perfectly. Cirque de Troumouse is a fantastic climb high up in the National Park. Never used by Le Tour, it is practically unknown to cyclists, it is in my view one of the best climbs in the Pyrenees.
