Le Tour de France 2010 in the Hautes Pyrénées.
Stage 17 – Pau – Col du Tourmalet and Etape du Tour.
The cost for a stage start is approximately €55,000 and a stage finish €115,000. The money goes on publicity, entertainment, provision of facilities for 500 journalists, catering for 4500 people in the tour entourage and the provision of road side barriers in towns along the route. None of this includes the cost of policing or the money spent by the tour organizers ASO.
On top of this money, the region will spend €870,000 on road repairs for the tour including the €500,000 in Hautes Pyrénées. The recent snow fall is expected to hamper the road work on the Col du Tourmalet which will not open until the work is completed. The date for the opening of the Col is June 4th if all work is complete and the weather permits. Most of the work is needed on the Luz side so it should be possible to cycle to the summit from La Mongie before that date.
At the moment all cols are open except Col du Tourmalet, Cirque du Litor, Col du Tentes and Cirque du Tramousse.
