Lac d'Estaing

I took an easy ride up to lac d'Estaing this afternoon. It was 20c with a real touch of summer about it. There is still plenty of snow up on the peaks, normally by this time of year it would be mostly gone. It is still much colder than normal for this time of year, but Lac d'Estaing is always beautiful.

Luz Ardiden

The weather continues to be good here, excellent conditions for cycling. It's going to change at the weekend with a return to cold and snow. Yesterday afternoon I rode up to Luz Ardiden. The roads were almost deserted despite it being ski season, I must have picked the right time of day. Luz Ardiden is a great climb, 13km @ 7.6% and very steady all the way up. It is the most fun descent anywhere.

A ride up Col du Tourmalet
Nov 17 2012 07:43 PM |
Velo Peloton

I rode up Col du Tourmalet today, was very surprised by how little snow there was. The wind has been from the south for the last few days and it has been very warm down in the valley, up to 24c in the afternoon but still very cold at night, down to -5. The forecast is good for the next few days and then winter will return, probably for good this time. Today will be my last time up the Col du Tourmalet this year, I really only expected to get to the ski station so to make the summit feels good.

Autumn Afternoon

It is late autumn here in the mountains, today was beautiful and sunny, actually quite warm out in the sun but bitter cold in the shade. Conditions for cycling are still great. The high cols have closed for now but may reopen in a few days if there is no more snow. In any case they will be permanently closed for winter in a few weeks. The colours of autumn have really developed over the last few days. Magnificent!
