Is Col du Tourmalet Open 2013.

The water is falling, but still remains dangerous. The situation is uncertain, but it seems that the western side of Col du Tourmalet will be inaccessible for several weeks. Beragés is wrecked and while there are no photos I have heard that buildings have collapsed, the road has been washed away in many places. The situation in Gorge du Luz is also unknown. Another person died in Luz today swept away by the river. The road to Cauterets is also wrecked and will be closed for several weeks. Further east there is much damage at Luchon. Col de Pyresourde is closed. Saint Beat is described as catastrophic. I'm sure it will all be more clear tomorrow.

Col du Tourmalet is open from La Mongie to the summit.

Chaos everywhere in the mountains, heavy flooding, power lines down, roads washed away, villages being evacuated. Lourdes and Luchon underwater.

Beautiful Sunshine

I went for a ride with guests from La Lanterne Rouge Pyrénées Cycling Lodge this morning. Beautiful sunshine all day. We did Col du Spandelles from Argeles-Gazost, descended to Ferrières and then rode up the 12km @ 8% to Col du Soulor. Two super hard climbs and great company.

Montée du Géant 2013

Update Thursday 6th June 2013.
The Géant will be lifted to the summit from Super-Baréges Ski Station by helicopter at 13:00.

Second Update 31st May 2013.
All change again.
Montée du Géant will leave Pierrefitte as planned. It will end at the ski station at Super-baréges. The Géant will be placed at the summit on a later date when safety allows. A final decision will be made on 4th June. On the afternoon of 8th June a ceremony will take place at the forge at Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, in memory of Eugène Christophe.

Lac d'Estaing

I took an easy ride up to lac d'Estaing this afternoon. It was 20c with a real touch of summer about it. There is still plenty of snow up on the peaks, normally by this time of year it would be mostly gone. It is still much colder than normal for this time of year, but Lac d'Estaing is always beautiful.

Rain

It been raining heavily for a few days here. It's still warm and the snow is melting fast. I went for a ride with 4 cyclists from Flanders who are staying at the Cycling Lodge. It was wet, tough and lots of fun. We did Lac d'Estaing, Col des Bordéres and Col du Soulor. The gate to Cirque du Litor was still locked.

The Sun Returns

After 4 days of cold, rain and snow, the sun has returned to the mountains this morning. I took this photo from one of the bedrooms in La Lanterne Rouge Pyrénées Cycling Lodge. The view is of our village Saint Savin, with Hautacam on the left and a view up the Gorge de Luz towards Col du Tourmalet.
